When Should You Seek Emergency Eye Care?

Some eye problems can safely wait for a routine appointment. Others should be evaluated immediately.

• A curtain, shadow, or veil in your vision

• Sudden distortion or waviness in your central vision
• A painful red eye
• Any major change in vision that feels unusual or alarming

When it comes to eye injuries or sudden vision changes, timing matters. Many conditions are much easier to treat when caught early.

Sudden Vision Loss, Pain, or Light Sensitivity

Sudden changes in vision should never be ignored.

A rapid decrease in vision, severe pain, or new light sensitivity can sometimes signal serious inflammation, elevated eye pressure, retinal problems, internal bleeding, or infection. Even when symptoms seem mild at first, delaying treatment can increase the risk of complications.

If something suddenly feels wrong with your vision or your eyes, we strongly encourage you to contact us as soon as possible.

Foreign Body Removal & Eye Injuries

Metal, wood, dust, and other debris in the eye are extremely common, especially for patients working with tools, welding equipment, grinding wheels, or construction materials.

The sooner foreign material is removed, the easier the treatment usually is. Metal left in the eye can begin rusting quickly, making removal more difficult and increasing the risk of scarring.

We regularly treat:

• Metal in the eye
• Corneal scratches and abrasions
• Welding injuries
• Dust and debris under the eyelid
• Eye irritation from construction or yard work

Flashes, Floaters & Retinal Detachment Symptoms

New flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a dark curtain moving across your vision may be signs of a retinal tear or retinal detachment.

A retinal detachment is a true medical emergency. Early treatment may sometimes be managed with a relatively simple laser procedure, while delayed treatment can require significantly more complex surgery and increase the risk of permanent vision loss.

Patients with high nearsighted prescriptions are often at higher risk for retinal problems and should be especially cautious about sudden visual changes.

Macular Degeneration Emergencies

Patients with macular degeneration should pay close attention to sudden changes in their central vision.

Dry macular degeneration can sometimes progress into wet macular degeneration, which may cause:

• Sudden distortion in vision
• Wavy or bent lines
• Rapid blurring of vision
• Dark or missing spots in central vision

Wet macular degeneration requires prompt medical treatment to help reduce the risk of permanent central vision loss.

Because we use advanced OCT retinal imaging technology, we are often able to quickly evaluate these changes and coordinate referral to the appropriate retinal specialist when needed.

Red Eyes, Infections & Inflammation

Not every red eye is simple irritation.

Eye redness accompanied by pain, light sensitivity, discharge, blurry vision, or swelling may indicate infection or significant inflammation that requires medical treatment.
