What Are Multifocal IOLs?
Multifocal intraocular lens implants are advanced artificial lenses used to replace your eye’s natural lens. While traditionally used during cataract surgery to replace a lens that has become cloudy, this same technology is now frequently used in a procedure called Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). In RLE, the lens is replaced even before a cataract develops, specifically to correct your vision and reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses.
The Autofocus Advantage
Unlike standard lens implants that provide a single point of focus, multifocal IOLs are designed to provide multiple ranges of vision simultaneously. For many patients, this creates an autofocus effect, allowing them to:
- Drive with clear distance vision.
- Work at a computer with a clear intermediate range.
- Read a book or phone without constantly searching for reading glasses.
Beyond Clarity: The Vibrancy Benefit
Patients who undergo lens replacement, whether for cataracts or RLE, often report that the world looks different after surgery. Because the new, clear lens filters light more effectively, colors often appear more vibrant. Patients frequently describe whiter whites, bluer blues, and an overall increase in contrast and detail that they hadn’t realized they were missing.
Who Is a Candidate?
The target age for these procedures is typically 60 or older, though younger patients with specific high prescriptions or visual needs may be candidates. It is important to note that these premium implants involve a higher out-of-pocket cost and careful surgical planning. Dr. Ackerson works closely with you to assess whether your eyes are a good fit for this technology and to set realistic expectations regarding side effects like potential halos or glare, which can occur in some lighting conditions.
